Protected Geographical Indication

Recognition: It recognized the IGP - Azores for wines of white and red qaulidade, meeting the production requirements laid down in the ordinance 42/2003 of 22 May. Alternatively, those wines may use the "Azores Regional Wine" mention.

Area: It covers the nine islands that make up the Azores.

Geographical Indication

Recognition: It is recognized as Geographical Indication (GI), the name "Azores", which can be used for identification of sparkling wine, rose wine or rosé, fortified wine, brandy wine and grape marc and wine vinegar satisfying the conditions production laid down by decree. Alternatively wines may use the designation "Vinho Regional Azores."

Area: It covers the nine islands that make up the Azores.

Winemaking, preparation and distillation of wine products:

Musts intended for wines with a GI must have a minimum natural alcoholic strength by volume of:

- Rosé wine or rosé - 10% vol .;

- Wine basis for sparkling - 9% vol .;

- Liqueur wine - 10% vol ..

The rosé wines may be sold only after a four-month internship and liqueur wines after a minimum of stage eight months.

Product characteristics:

The wines with the IG must present the general characteristics defined in the legislation and have an actual alcoholic strength minimum of:

- Rosé wine or rosé - 11% vol .;

- Sparkling Wine - 10,5% vol .;

- Liqueur wine - 16% vol.

From the organoleptic point of view, to ensure their quality, the wines must meet the appropriate requirements for color, clarity, aroma and flavor characteristic of the predominant varieties and meet the soil and weather conditions of the production area.

Grape marc spirit and wine spirit entitled to IG 'Azores' must comply with the characteristics and practices authorized in force, the minimum aging period and other complementary aspects defined in Rules of CVR Azores.

Grape marc spirit entitled to IG must have an alcohol content less than 40% vol ..

The realization of physicochemical analysis is rule and discipline to be observed for the adoption of wine and wine products entitled to GI "Azores", can the organoleptic assessment be performed by the certifying authority whenever the latter deems appropriate in order to maintain the required quality standards.
